The AI conversations use a third-party AI provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google). You bring your own API key from one of those providers and add it in Settings → AI Settings. Reading, highlighting, and note-taking work fully without any AI key.
On your device. TruNaut is local-first: your books, highlights, and notes stay local. The paid tiers ask you to sign in, which tells us an email address and nothing about what you read. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Select text while reading and choose Highlight from the selection menu. You can then attach a note or start an AI conversation from that highlight.
Double-check that the key is for the provider selected in Settings → AI Settings, that it's active in your provider account, and that the device has an internet connection.
Yes. In Settings, enable Highlights & Notes export (and/or Insights export) and choose a folder — for example an iCloud Drive or Obsidian folder — to get Markdown copies you control.
